Pleven Medical University is one of the five medical universities in Bulgaria. It was established in 1974; expanding the horizons, size and reputation of the City Hospital, founded in 1865. Combining traditions of the past with the present possibilities, the university incorporates educational and therapeutic facilities, with a contemporary pre-clinical base, Institute Hospital.

With more than 1000 beds, the hospital provides in all major medical fields. As well as having a large number of specialized clinics, research units with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment are also available. These are efficiently used for research, treat patients, train students, trainee doctors and post graduates.

English Medicine

The English medicine program lasts 6 years. Medicine in Bulgaria is typically structured so that the first 2 years focus on theory, with the majority of the next 3 years focusing on clinical study. Finally, the programme is completed with an internship year of medical rotations before graduation.

During the final year of their studies, students are required to take the state exam (anyone who has studied medicine in Bulgaria must take), in order to receive their license to practice. At the end of the six years, students receive the professional qualification of Physician or Doctor of Medicine (MD), and are awarded a Master’s Degree.

The Degree and license is accredited in many countries around the world and allows you to go back and practice in the UK. Bulgarian standards through the duration of the course meet EU requirements.

Currently, there are 2044 students. 275 of these are foreigners; including 78 of Indian nationality – the biggest community of foreign students at the university. Other international students are from Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova, Greece, Turkey, Nigeria, Albania, Cyprus, Congo, Syria, Algeria, USA, Japan, Great Britain and France.

835 young doctors from Bulgaria and abroad are taking postgraduate courses at the different specialized clinics of the University Hospital.

Highly qualified lecturers, with comprehensive academic experience, are employed. The course of instruction is carried out in 24 departments by more than 60 professors.

Around 300 are assistant professors. Most of them are members of national and international scientific and medical societies and authors of research studies.

Various modern teaching methods are applied in the academic process. These include theoretical lectures, small group practical tutorials and seminars. Additionally, the students may join extracurricular teaching courses and scientific circles functioning at these departments. Training groups are composed of a maximum of 6 students.
